Drop SIR: Stalin to Centre

Chennai:
Tamil Nadu
chief minister
M K Stalin
has demanded that the Union govt drop the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, comparing the exercise to 'playing with fire'.
In a social media post on Friday, Stalin said the SIR was being misused to erase voters from disadvantaged and dissenting communities, so that the outcome could be tilted in favour of the
BJP
.
"This is not about reform. It is about engineering outcomes," he said.
He said what had happened in Bihar during the SIR was a telling example of the potential threat posed by the exercise.

"The Delhi regime knows the same electorate that once voted for it will now vote it out. That is why it is trying to stop them from voting altogether," he said.
"If you (BJP) cannot defeat us, you seek to delete us. Don't play with fire. Any threat to our democracy will be met with firm resistance," he added.
Stalin said that TN will raise its voice against SIR with full force.
"Democracy belongs to the people. It will not be stolen," Stalin said in the post with the tag 'Quit SIR.'
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam has written to chief electoral officer Archana Patnaik asking her to convene an all-party meeting to discuss SIR. Stating that there are reports about preparatory work for commencing SIR in TN too, Shanmugam said the Election Commission of India should listen to views of political parties and then proceed with electoral roll revision.

NEW DELHI: Union minister Chirag Paswan on July 26 said he felt "sorry to support" the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, charging it with failure to control the law and order situation in the State. Paswan, who heads the LJP (Ram Vilas) -- a constituent of the BJP-led NDA, was talking to reporters in Patna before leaving for Gayaji, where he is scheduled to address a rally. "I have heard claims that the recent spurt in violent crimes is linked to the upcoming assembly polls, and there are attempts to defame this government. Still, it is the responsibility of the administration to keep the law and order situation under control. I feel sorry to support a government which is failing on this count," said the Hajipur MP.
