WWE 'dream match' fans are clamouring for was cancelled 14 years ago
WWE fans are desperate to see Motor City Machine Guns lock horns with The Hardy Boyz, and it almost happened.
SmackDown stars Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin – who are now available as playable characters in WWE 2K25's New Wave DLC pack which launched today – have long been hailed as one of the best tag teams of the last 20 years, but a bout with icons Matt and Jeff Hardy has always eluded them.
Speaking exclusively to Metro after the Hardys admitted they'd be up for it, Sabin quipped: 'Sounds like a dream match.'
'It was scheduled once,' his tag partner recalled, noting that it was on the cards around 14 years ago.
He added: 'Maybe 2011, there was a UK tour TNA had booked that match on in particular. And I can't remember where it was gonna be. It was gonna be somewhere in England.
'And something happened, I can't remember exactly what, but it never came to fruition. So we've somehow managed to evade the Hardy Boys our entire career, and it's probably time that we get that match.'
They're two of the greatest teams to never face each other, while there have constantly been comparisons due to their high energy wrestling style.
There was echos just last week, when MCMG battled Street Profits and #DIY in an utterly wild Tables, Ladders and Chairs match reminiscent of the Hardys' TLC battles with the Dudley Boyz and Edge & Christian.
'As far as the people involved in that match, if you were to go back and analyse wrestling history, we by far have the most experience in these types of situations, and it's not even close,' Shelley pointed out.
'I dare say that we were brought up in part with said experience from Team 3D [the Dudleyz] who are the experts in these types of situations, no less.'
High risk dives, bodies crashing through tables, and even a fan's prosthetic leg being used as a weapon – the match had it all.
As much as everyone involved 'tried to calculate everything' they were doing, they're still feeling the effects.
'It is a match that you don't walk away from without any sort of scrapes or aches or bruises,' Shelley pointed out. 'You do give a bit of yourself when you go through those types of matches.
'But at the same time, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Even if we lost, I wouldn't trade it for the world. We'll just win the next one. There's got to be [another] one, right? There's got to be.'
In the meantime, fans can put the Motor City Machine Guns in whatever matches they want with the new WWE 2K25 DLC pack, which also features Giulia, Stephanie Vaquer and a to-be-announced celebrity guest.
'It's almost indescribable. It's really one of those bucket list type things,' Sabin said of being in a WWE video game. 'When you get into wrestling, you make it to WWE, you want to be on a trading card, you want to have an action figure, and you want to be in a video game.'
The New Wave pack – which is available as part of the Season Pass or individual purchase – includes MyFACTION cards for each star, including MCMG, and a total of more than 40 moves and taunts.
It's actually not the former TNA Wrestling champion's first foray with the franchise, as he previously 'did a lot of mocap' work around seven years ago, creating moves for other wrestlers.
'It was fun. I actually got to do my own entrance for the game,' he beamed. 'It wasn't named after me or anything like that, but my entrance was in the game before this, which is pretty cool.'
This time, the process for the game was much simpler as they spent an hour before an episode of SmackDown getting their faces scanned and photos taken.
'I'm curious to know, actually, who mo-capped our moves,' Sabin admitted.
Appearing in the game just months after their high profile debut is another pinch-me moment for the duo, but there was no greater surprise or honour than capturing the tag team titles in just their second week.
'It was pretty surprising. We didn't really have expectations that high coming in and winning the championship in our third match, second week here,' Sabin said. More Trending
'But that just shows the trust that they have in us, and the confidence that they have in us as performers. A lot of people put in good words for us, to just get us here and to be able to bypass NXT and go right to the main roster like that.
'That says something for what we've done, and the hard work we put in throughout the years. Hopefully we've made all the people who put in a word for us proud.'

David shocked by Nick's news in Coronation Street spoiler video
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A new Coronation Street spoiler video reveals the moment David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) learns some shocking news from brother Nick Tilsley (Ben Price). It all kicks off when Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) escapes from prison. Having been incarcerated for the murder of Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), he's desperate to reunite with his family and do a runner. Sally and Tim Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor and Joe Duttine) almost scupper the plans when they reveal to his son Brody (Ryan Mulvey) that his little sister Joanie (Savanna Pennington) is heading to Weatherfield High for a taster day. Having finally made his escape, the school is the first place Mick heads to. He storms through the corridors and locks Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) and headteacher Orla Crawshaw (Carla Mendonça) in her office, hoping that he would now have free reign to track down his daughter. Little does he realise, Sally has taken her back to Coronation Street and is taking her on a tour of the factory. Later in the week, Nick is concerned that his son Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) is keeping something under his hat about the incident. Usually a level headed and chatty young lad, he's suspiciously quiet and refuses to engage. After a conversation with Hope Dobbs (Isabella Flanagan), it becomes apparent that Sam's life was almost on the line when his cousin Lily Platt (Grace Ashcroft-Gardner) refused to help. More Trending She shut herself away in a classroom, and refused to allow him in. Seriously troubled by the incident, Nick heads to the salon to confront David about what happened and his jaw-drops upon realising what his daughter did. He tries to play the incident down, saying that Lily wouldn't purposely endanger Sam, and promises to talk to her. View More » Why has Lily behaved so irresponsibly? Ex-WWE star pulled from AEW All In 90 minutes before start time
A major last minute change has been made to tonight's AEW All In event on Amazon Prime Video. The All Elite Wrestling show – which has an 8pm start time for fans in the UK, the same as WWE's NXT Great American Bash on Netflix – was set to feature former WWE star Adam Cole defending his TNT Championship. Unfortunately, AEW owner Tony Khan has cancelled his planned match with Kyle Fletcher, and stripped him of the title. In an announcement made around an hour and a half before the show was due to start, the Fulham FC boss said during a live video on X: 'I cannot clear Adam Cole to go out there to wrestle today, I don't feel good about it. 'I had a long talk with him. I'm gonna ask Adam to take some time away to make sure he's clear, but I do need to vacate the championship.' Instead, fans will get a '4-Way Fight' for the now vacant championship, with Kyle Fletcher getting three new opponents to determine a new champion. He will now face Daniel Garcia, Sammy Guevara, and Dustin Rhodes – best known to WWE fans as Goldust – with the winner being crowd the TNT Champion. The nature of the injury is yet to be confirmed, but fans are heartbroken after Cole has dealt with numerous setbacks since joining AEW in 2021. 'I hope Adam Cole recovers well man, cause vacating the TNT title the day of a big title defense like this is so heartbreaking,' wrote @OmarCameUp on X. 'Adam Cole was hitting on a consistent base since he won the belt. Heartbreaking,' @AdamGoldberg28 agreed. And @DragunovTheDon added: 'I feel so bad for Adam Cole right now. I said it a week ago that his AEW run has been nothing but unlucky because of injuries and now he got injured again 💔' Cole is also yet to address the announcement and his removal from the show, with his most recent posts on X all promoting the event over the last few days. He has history at AEW All In, as he headlined the 2023 edition at Wembley Stadium when he faced MJF in a historic main event. Cole fell off an entrance ramp in September 2023, as he suffered a horror ankle injury in a freak accident, while a year earlier, he was out of action for several months due to issues following a concussion. Reflecting on his recovery, he previously told Metro: 'It was stressful, because of what I was going through, this very legitimate, very serious head injury. View More » 'The idea of showcasing that to the world was very intimidating but I'm so glad that I did. 'The fans were so supportive the whole way through, and they're gonna get to see a totally different side.' This is a breaking news story, more to follow soon… Check back shortly for further updates. Elderly couple travel three hours for attraction that doesn't exist
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video An elderly couple were duped by an AI-generated video, driving three hours in hopes of visiting a fake tourist spot. The couple, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, saw a video advertising 'Kuak Skyride', a fake cable car ride with nearby restaurants. The video showed what appeared to be a female journalist interviewing attendees and boasting about the new attraction. But not all was as it seemed. The entire thing was created with AI, and the couple weren't made aware of that until they arrived at a hotel in Perak and asked staff about it. After hearing that no such place existed, the infuriated woman threatened to sue the journalist in the video, before being told she was also not real. A hotel staff member posted about the couple's experience on social media to warn other families not to fall for the hoax. The fake attraction was advertised on the TV channel 'TV Rakyat', which also doesn't exist, showing beautiful scenes in the forest. The elderly woman reportedly asked the hotel staff: 'Why do they do this to people?' They weren't the only ones to fall for the fake video. Another person claimed their parents paid around £2,000 to rent a van and drive to the attraction before realising it wasn't real. It's the latest trick using AI to scam unwitting people into going places and spending money when they shouldn't. Earlier this year, Martin Lewis issued a warning after some families lost money in a scheme which used his likeness to trick them out of £76,000. Des Healey, a kitchen fitter from Brighton, was tricked into handing over his life savings to a bogus bitcoin investment scheme that did not really exist. He first became aware of the scam in August 2023, after spotting a fake ad on Facebook which used an AI-generated video of Martin Lewis who appeared to be endorsing an investment scheme by Elon Musk. Sharing his story on Good Morning Britain, Des explained how he had been tricked by the fake video. 'If you listen to the voice and look at how the mouth moves, that normally gives it away.' 'But at the time, obviously, I wasn't studying that. I just got Martin Lewis saying that normally he doesn't cover these [investments] but this time, this is such a good thing.' More Trending He added: 'Now I feel how stupid I was, how blind I was. You know, I'm normally the type of person who would tell other people that doesn't sound right, but these people… Someone once described it as being under their spell, and I think that was probably the best term that he could have possibly said. I knew, in a way, something wasn't right, but I hoped that it was okay.' Responding to the story, Martin Lewis said Des was 'brave and admirable' for speaking out and telling his story as 'a warning flag' for others. 'I've spent my entire career trying to help consumers, and these criminals, thieves, organised crime people have perverted my reputation,' he told Des on his BBC Sounds podcast. He said scammers are 'psychologically adept at manipulating us, use huge online and intellectual resources in order to steal our money… falling for scams does not make you a mug – it makes you a victim, but it doesn't make you a mug'.
