SEPANG: The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) services specifically for e-hailing by Grab Malaysia is expected to improve the quality of the transportation system at the country's main entry points, thus supporting the sustainable mobility agenda in line with national aspirations. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the ministry (MOT) fully supports Grab Malaysia's initiative and is committed to expediting the country's transition to a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system. Grab Malaysia today also launched its 'EV-only ride' services as a booking option in the Grab application, and also set up an EV Lounge at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as an added convenience for users of its premium EV services. 'The selection of KLIA as the launch location is very strategic, not only because of the high passenger traffic but also because it provides maximum exposure to domestic and international users regarding Malaysia's efforts to enhance green mobility,' he said. Speaking at the Grab EV launch here today, Loke said that public-private collaboration is the key to successfully accelerating the use of EVs nationwide. According to him, the launch of Grab Malaysia's new initiative is a catalyst to expanding EVs nationwide, not just in the Klang Valley, but also in other major cities such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
Advertisement 'The latest MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between Grab and several strategic partners, including EV providers and charging companies recently, reflects the conformity of the industry with the country's aspirations. 'The MOT will continue to support such efforts and we urge more industry players to step forward and play their part in the country's decarbonisation agenda,' he said. Through the National Transport Policy 2019-2030 and the Ministry of Transport Strategic Plan 2021-2025, Loke said electric vehicles have been identified as one of the main pillars to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the use of green technology. Efforts being taken or will be implemented by the government include tax exemptions an incentives for EV purchases, installation of EV chargers and the use of renewable energy in the transport sector. Other efforts include the implementation of low carbon zones in urban areas and the provision of more widespread EV charging infrastructure, including on highways, shopping malls and airports. Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor said the new initiative supports Malaysia's green mobility push with the introduction of an EV-only ride option for airport tourists. 'By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand like KLIA, we intend to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs, while increasing awareness among users. 'This launch marks an important achievement is transforming the foundation of on-demand public transport towards low- or zero-emission modes, making sustainable mobility more accessible to both our driver-partners and passengers,' he said. Grab EV will use BYD M6 electric vehicles, a seven-seater electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that offers passengers a quieter and smoother travel experience.

KLIA Aerotrain returns July 1: Anwar to officiate relaunch, Loke applauds revival
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The KLIA Aerotrain will resume full operations tomorrow at 10am after nearly 28 months of suspension. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1). Bernama reported that the upgraded automated people mover system is part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) airport transformation agenda. 'A big thanks to everyone who worked day and night to bring the Aerotrain back,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a Facebook post today. The Aerotrain, an icon of KLIA since 1998, underwent a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan. The modernised system now uses Alstom Innovia APM 300R three-car driverless trainsets that can carry up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. The journey between the main terminal and the satellite building now takes under three minutes. Each train is equipped with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce disruptions, improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort. The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) conducted six months of testing and commissioning for the new system between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. The project, initially targeted for completion in March 2025, faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while maintaining airport operations. KLIA T1 handles over 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a key role in ensuring smooth transfers for international passengers. The satellite terminal hosts many long-haul carriers, making fast terminal connections essential to reduce missed connections and support seamless travel. With the Aerotrain back in service, KLIA is positioned to handle growing passenger volumes ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the airport's projected return to pre-pandemic traffic levels.

RTS Link Ticket Fares To Be Announced Closer To Launch
By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, June 30 (Bernama) -- The operator of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is conducting a final market study to determine ticket fares, with the final pricing and fare mechanism to be announced closer to the service's launch, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Monday. 'We hope that the right price mechanism is in place to ensure that it can encourage more people to use the RTS service. bootstrap slideshow 'The whole idea of this project is to make the modal shift, to ensure that more people use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with Singapore acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, after unveiling the first of the eight RTS Link train sets at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) here. The event was also attended by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, is the operator of the RTS Link, a cross-border rail connecting Malaysia and Singapore. Loke said the Malaysian government was pushing for a more open payment system, in line with global public transport trends, which would allow commuters to use multiple modes of payment. Singapore's Siow said fares should be determined commercially by RTSO, taking into account demand and supply, as well as costs. Meanwhile, Loke said RTSO would also finalise the operating hours for the train service, which links Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore, by taking into account early commuters.
