Sick of online dating, NYC singles are looking for love via PowerPoint presentations
They've got some hot pitches At the buzzy new dating event Pitch & Pair, Gothamites try to sell the audience on their single friends with three-to-five minute PowerPoint presentations. 'I have a lot of shy friends who are single who are really great catches, and they kind of don't flourish in the typical dating apps or speed dating because they're introverted,' said the event's founder, Joe Teblum, a 33-year-old who lives in Chelsea and works in tech marketing. 'I also saw that there was this trend of people wanting to meet in person especially after Covid.' 8 At Pitch and Pair events, New Yorkers pitch their single friends to potential mates. Emmy Park for NY Post At an event last week at Slate in the Flatiron District, 16 locals gave presentations to a few hundred in the audience. There were bullet points, short videos and tickers. 'He can explain things without making you fall asleep,' Kedar Venkataramani's cousin told the audience of the 30-year-old, 5-foot-8 intellectual property lawyer who lives in NYC. 'He has a sharp mind, a sharp suit, and zero ego.' The cousin also praised Venkataramani as a soccer enthusiast and tasting menu aficionado. 'He will take you to a Broadway show including 'Hamilton' or 'Book of Mormon',' she said. 'He also Citi Bikes everywhere like it's his personal Tour de France.' The crowd was especially excited about the presentation for Chris Puch, a 33-year-old firefighter who lives in Staten Island and is a pseudo-celebrity on Tik Tok for being a hunky public servant. 8 Joe Teblum launched the events last year. They now attract hundreds and quickly sell out. Emmy Park for NY Post 'He will cook healthy for you even though I've seen him eat $50 worth of Taco Bell in one sitting, so you don't have to worry about him being too healthy,' said his matchmaker friend, laughing. 'If you guys like to travel, he loves it. He's a world traveler, and he's been all over the world, and he's looking for someone to go with besides himself.' Anand Tamirisa, a 33-year-old who lives in Chelsea and works in investment banking, was another one of the singles on offer. He admitted that he had authored much of the presentation himself, even though it was given by a dating guru buddy. 'I'm working in PowerPoint all day so it's easy for me,' he said. 'I made it in two hours. I even have a ticker on the top and stuff.' 8 Firefighter Chris Puch (with Caroline Busch) was a crowd favorite. Emmy Park for NY Post 8 Puch's presentation touted his love for travel and Taco Bell. Emmy Park for NY Post His deck included information such as 'Moved to NYC in 2018 after being inspired by Jay-Z,' 'Works in investment banking but doesn't wear a vest,' and, 'Has performed stand-up comedy at world-class dive bars.' It proved effective. By the time he walked off stage, Tamirisa had five new 'follow' requests on Instagram. (At the end of each presentation the matchmaker friend tells the crowd how to reach the single, whether it's via Instagram, email or text.) 'If I end up with one of them it would be a really good story,' Tamirisa said. Pitch & Pair takes place twice a month at venues round town, including City Winery in the Meatpacking District and Second City in Brooklyn. It costs $40 to $60 pitch — with two tickets to the event included — and $15 to $25 to sit in the audience. The next event is August 4th at Caveat on the Lower East Side. 8 Anand Tamirisa (left, with Jaspreet Mini Hanjra) authored much of his presentation himself, he said. Emmy Park for NY Post Events regularly sell out shortly after being announced — in as little as 34 hours. When Teblum first came up with the idea about a year ago, interest was limited. 'Only one person wanted to do a presentation,' he said of the first event, which was held at Kilo Bravo bar in Williamsburg and only attracted a few people beyond his friends. 8 The night's PowerPoint presentations displayed the fluency many young professionals have with the medium. Emmy Park for NY Post 8 Pitch and Pair is held twice a month, at various locations. Emmy Park for NY Post ts some early iterations, people tended to roast their friends in an attempt to be funny. Audiences sometimes erupted into 'boos.' Now, Teblum tells participants to keep it positive. 'The crowd gets so into it,' he said. 'Like the matchmaker shows a picture of someone's dog or hobby and everyone breaks out cheering.' 8 Sophia Demetriou said being pitched was a bit akward. Emmy Park for NY Post Still, Sophia Demetriou, who was the first single presented at last week's event, said the experience was slightly uncomfortable. Her former roommate extolled her virtues, including the fact that she has never lost a game of backgammon, can 'serve looks' and is a Pizza Hut connoisseur. 'It was terrifying,' said Demetriou, a 26-year-old fashion designer. 'But I do think this is how people are going to date in the future. It just makes sense.'

The Weeknd & Shakira to Headline 2025 Global Citizen Festival With Tyla, Ayra Starr & Mariah the Scientist
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Just days after producing the first-ever FIFA Club World Cup halftime show, international advocacy organization Global Citizen today announced the lineup of the 2025 Global Citizen Festival, set to take place on Central Park's Great Lawn on September 27. The Weeknd and Shakira will headline this year's festival, with performances by Tyla, and Mariah the Scientist. Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman will host the event, with additional participants to be announced in the coming weeks. The 2025 Global Citizen Festival campaign will focus on providing energy access for 1 million people across Africa, ensuring 30,000 children around the world can access a quality education and football, in partnership with FIFA, mobilizing $200 million to protect 30 million hectares of the Amazon rainforest, and registering 40,000 New Yorkers to volunteer across the city. Tickets to the Global Citizen Festival are free and can be earned by taking action on these issues on the Global Citizen app or at 'I'm honored to headline the incredible Global Citizen Festival in Central Park this September. Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world. I can't wait to perform, unite, and inspire action,' said Shakira. 'The 2025 Global Citizen Festival marks my eleventh year as host, and I'm thrilled by the progress we've made over the years,' said Hugh Jackman, Global Citizen Ambassador. 'The growing impact of the Global Citizen movement touches every corner of the world, and I'm eager to advocate alongside my fellow ambassadors, performers, world leaders, and private sector executives to leave the world better than we found it.' The Global Citizen Festival is presented by Cisco. Major Partners are Authentic Brands Group, Bridgewater Associates, Delta Air Lines, PayPal and Venmo, and P&G Production Partner Live Nation; Exclusive U.S. Audio Partner iHeartMedia; and Location Partner New York City Parks. The 2025 Global Citizen Festival is produced by Emmy Award winning production companies Done+Dusted and Diversified Production Services. To earn free tickets to the 2025 Global Citizen Festival, download the Global Citizen app or visit and take action towards three campaigns goals: Goal 1: Provide Energy Access for 1 Million People Across Africa As Africa's population grows, so does its demand for electricity, yet too many communities still lack reliable energy. To address this, Global Citizen's 'Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign aims to mobilize $1.5 billion to train 50,000 young workers in critical energy skills like solar installation, grid maintenance, and energy services. The 2025 Global Citizen Festival campaign is calling on governments, companies, and philanthropists to step up with major commitments to invest in clean, affordable solutions to power homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. In partnership with the European Commission, Global Citizen is catalyzing private sector investment in at least two major infrastructure projects, valued at over $500 million, with co-funding from governments including Denmark, Australia, and the United Kingdom. These investments have the potential to bring clean, reliable energy to at least 1 million people across the continent while creating jobs, reducing carbon emissions, and accelerating Africa's green energy transition. Goal 2: Mobilize $200 Million to Protect 30 Million Hectares of the Amazon Rainforest To defend the planet, we must protect the Amazon from deforestation. Indigenous communities are leading the way to protect, restore, and re-wild the rainforest by growing food, making natural products, and passing down traditions that generate new, profitable income streams. Global Citizen and Re:wild are partnering to raise $200 million to support the next generation of indigenous and community-based entrepreneurs as part of a larger $1 billion plan to protect and restore the Amazon. These projects will help protect up to 30 million hectares of rainforest, approximately equivalent to the size of Italy, and keep more than 20 billion trees standing. The 2025 Global Citizen Festival campaign is urging the German, Norwegian, and French governments, along with corporations and philanthropists, to support over 20 Indigenous groups and help protect one of the most important forests on Earth. Goal 3: Provide Access to Education for 30,000 Children Around the World According to UNESCO, 250 million children worldwide are falling behind on basic literacy skills. In response, Global Citizen and FIFA launched the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund to raise $100 million to provide at least 100,000 children worldwide with access to quality education, by providing grants for community-based programs in over 150 countries. Already, $1 from every ticket sold to international events, such as The Weeknd's 'After Hours Til Dawn' tour and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup have been donated to the fund. Through round-up donations from the public, corporate and philanthropic contributions, matching gifts, and ticket sales donations, this year's Global Citizen Festival campaign aims to raise at least $30 million – enough to help 30,000 children learn to read and write. The 2025 Global Citizen Festival campaign is also calling on governments, philanthropies, and the private sector to fund essential services of healthcare, nutrition, and safe classrooms that make it possible for children to access educational opportunities. The Global Citizen Festival proudly supports and partners with mission-aligned nonprofit organizations across New York's five boroughs, including: Bowery Mission, Breaking Ground, Citymeals on Wheels, Covenant House, Henry Street Settlement, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, South Asian Youth Action (SAYA), South Bronx Unite and WIN (Women in Need, Inc). Additionally, Global Citizen is partnering with Goodera to drive 40,000 to sign-up for volunteer opportunities to earn points towards festival tickets by providing career development mentorship for young people around the world, such as resume guidance, and interview coaching. 'Ending extreme poverty is within our reach – but only if we come together to ensure governments and corporations deliver on their promises: scaling up renewable energy, protecting the Amazon, and investing in education for the next generation,' said Hugh Evans, Co-Founder & CEO, Global Citizen. 'The time to act is now – because every delay puts more lives and more futures at risk. This is about investment in our future, not about aid.' 'Our partnership with Global Citizen reflects Cisco's commitment to our Purpose to power an inclusive future for all,' said Fran Katsoudas, EVP and Chief People, Policy & Purpose Officer, Cisco. 'Solving the complex problems of our world requires bold partners, daily action, and the influence of young innovators and activators. We're proud to support Global Citizen's international movement and flagship festivals to accelerate our impact, while inspiring new generations to lead.' This year, Global Citizen joins Colossal as the official charity partner of their America's Next Top Hitmaker competition, where one standout performer of over 65,000 participants will take the stage at the Global Citizen Festival pre-show on September 27. Voting closes on July 31, 2025. UK cartoonist 'Angry Dan' needs your help mapping NYC hot spots
From Big Ben to the Big Apple. Driven by a 'lifelong fascination' with New York City, UK cartoonist Daniel Ryder is planning to chart the hottest spots across the five boroughs using hand-drawn cartoons. 5 Angry Dan is looking to map top landmarks of New York City. Courtesy Angry Dan Advertisement But he's calling on New Yorkers for help. Ryder has spent the past few days pounding the pavement and handing out contact cards — encouraging New Yorkers to share their favorite spots to eat, drink and enjoy Gotham in all its glory. 'The core of the decision was, I just want to go to New York and draw it,' said Ryder, who goes by the moniker 'Angry Dan. 'I want to experience it. I want to know it better. Advertisement 'I'm hoping that the map will help to remind adults and to maybe show some kids for the first time, why it is one of the most wonderful places in the world.' The cartoonist calls his maps 'wiggly-windy jigsaw' puzzles, where the best parts of a city can be visually represented in an engaging way. He first began drawing as a child, but stopped when he learned he was colorblind. He only returned to it in his 30s, and hasn't put the pen down since. He finished his first map of London last year, which he said took him thousands of hours. Advertisement For that one, 'Angry Dan' sought advice from hundreds of Londoners to help him draw neighborhoods he didn't know as well. On this side of the pond though, he's sure he'll need even more help. 5 Drawing the London map took Angry Dan thousands of hours. Courtesy Angry Dan New Yorkers can answer questions about their favorite pizza joint, museums, buildings, greenspaces and views of the city on Ryder's website — to make sure no neighborhood gem goes untouched. On his very first night in the city, Ryder went to a Midtown bar, and ended up chatting with two New Yorkers about their favorite place to grab a bite. 'Immediately they get into this argument about which of the diners in Manhattan are tourist rubbish and which ones are genuine hives of culture,' he told The Post. 5 Angry Dan is handing out cards, asking New Yorkers to share their spots. Courtesy Angry Dan The cartoonist first fell in love with New York on a trip with his buddies in his early 20s. This time around, he's joined by his wife and young child. Drawing the five boroughs, he said, poses its own set of artistic challenges. Since Manhattan is more dense than Staten Island or Queens, visually representing the city accurately is a challenge. But 'Angry Dan' isn't deterred. Advertisement 'I had a dream about four nights ago, about how I'm going to compose the bottom end of Manhattan from the angle that I want to draw it from, and I was imagining the two big courts,' Ryder explained, using his hands to demonstrate the facades. 'It was getting really silly and I thought, 'Oh my God I'm getting way too way too into this.'' 5 Angry Dan installed a huge version of the map in London. Global Street Art. The maps are his way to give back to the cities he loves, Ryder said, and he hopes everyone will be able to share in the joy.
