Marseille make contact with Sikou Niakaté's entourage

Yahoo27-06-2025
According to a report from L'Équipe, Olympique de Marseille have made contact with SC Braga centre-back Sikou Niakaté's (25) entourage as they sound out a move for the Mali international.
Despite the arrival of CJ Egan-Riley (22) on a free transfer from Burnley FC, Marseille's goals in this transfer window remain the same. The club are looking to add two experienced centre-backs to the side to help shore up a defence that was far too porous last season (conceding 47 in Ligue 1, the second worst record in the top half of the table).

This has led Les Phocéens to consider several targets, namely Facundo Medina and Nayef Aguerd, but also Benoît Badiashile, Oscar Mingueza, and Ramy Bensebaini. This list also includes Niakaté, who is under contract in Portugal until 2028, but the club would be willing to sell him this summer for between €8 million and €11 million, according to information from L'Équipe.

Aston Villa advancing in talks to sign Nice forward Evann Guessand

Aston Villa are advancing in talks to sign Nice forward Evann Guessand. Guessand has been a long standing target, with The Athletic reporting in January that the 24-year-old was among a list of young forward options Villa wanted to sign. However, it was decided that the player would stay at Ligue 1 side Nice until the end of the season. Advertisement Villa are now working on a deal to sign Guessand but face competition for his signature. A move is not close but discussions are ongoing over fee. Villa are keen to strengthen in the forward positions, but have been stifled so far in this window due to fears of breaching profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) and UEFA squad costs (SCR). Presently, the only permanent signing has been back-up goalkeeper Marco Bizot from Brest. Villa begin their Premier League season against Newcastle United on August 16. Guessand would match the criteria of striker Villa are looking for. A young, dynamic forward who can play multiple positions and provide depth up front. Currently Ollie Watkins is Villa's only archetypal No 9 after the departure of Jhon Duran in January and Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United following his loan.

Jorge Costa, Champions League winning captain of Porto, dies at 53

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. The club's said in its announcement that Costa embodied Porto's values: 'dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest.' Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club's training center and was transported to São João Hospital. Costa's finest achievement in his playing career was as captain of Jose Mourinho's Porto team that was a surprise winner of the Champions League in 2004. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup. Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles. He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season. 'To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,' said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association. 'He was loved at Charlton, a man mountain of a player and a great guy too.' ___ AP soccer:
