Rooney, the nephew of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr, joined his uncle's franchise as a scout in 1972 before going on to become their director of pro scouting.
As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, he was credited with drafting Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert after escorting then-coach Chuck Noll to watch Lambert at Kent State.
After leaving the Steelers in 1979 to join the Detroit Lions, Rooney was hired by the New York Giants as director of pro personnel in 1985. He remained in that role until his retirement in 1999 before later returning in a part-time position.
Over the course of his legendary career as an NFL exec, he was part of six Super Bowl-winning teams.
'He was a great guy,' Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells told the Post-Gazette. 'When you're a head coach, you need someone to tell you the truth. Tim was our pro personnel guy, and that was his job.
'We had daily interaction every day talking about the roster. We had a lot of talks and became close. That enhanced our relationship. He understood me, and I understood him.'

The 35-year-old is already a three-time Super Bowl champion but the Chiefs failed in their bid for a historic three-peat. Reflecting on Kelce's career success, Veach said: 'The great ones know how to find it. They know where it's buried, and they know how to access it. 'And they can't access it at that age week in and week out, but when they need it, they know how to find it.' While Kelce is a fan favorite among Chiefs fans - and Swifties across the globe - the stats show that the tight end is on the decline. His 823 yards recorded last season is the lowest in his career, for a full season, and in the recent Super Bowl he managed four receptions for 39 yards as the Chiefs were humiliated. The 35-year-old has, however, been enjoying his offseason alongside girlfriend Taylor Swift and recently attended an event together for the first time as a couple. At the Tight End University event, Swift and Kelce were clearly locked in on each other, including sharing some PDA in front of cameras. Swift has attended 23 NFL games since she started dating Kelce, all while having touring commitments. That number should skyrocket as Kelce's time in the NFL may be dwindling with the 'Anti-Hero' singer on his arm.

Uber named official rideshare, delivery partner for Los Angeles Games
LOS ANGELES, July 9 (Reuters) - Uber (UBER.N), opens new tab will serve as the official rideshare and on-demand delivery partner of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as Team USA, organisers announced on Wednesday. The partnership will see Uber deploy its mobility platform to design, implement and optimise rideshare operations across the Los Angeles area It will offer transport options including cars, bikes and scooters to help athletes, officials and spectators navigate the city during the Games. Uber Eats, the company's food delivery division, will provide on-demand meal delivery to athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Village, with plans to introduce mobile ordering at select venues for spectators. "We're honored to partner with LA28 and Team USA," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement. "It's a tremendous privilege for us to help people from across the globe move around LA and offer on-demand delivery to the Olympic and Paralympic Village." LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman said Uber's commitment to innovation and seamless service aligns with the Games' vision to deliver an "unparalleled" experience. As part of the agreement, Uber will also support NBCUniversal's coverage of the LA28 Games as well as the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, including new ways to share athlete stories and competitions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The partnership marks Uber as the eighth new sponsor revealed this year for the LA28 Games, and organisers said the deal reflects LA28's ambition to stage the most technologically advanced Olympics to date. Last month LA28 named Japanese automaker Honda (7267.T), opens new tab as its automotive partner after announcing Archer Aviation (ACHR.N), opens new tab as its air-taxi provider and appointing data cloud analytics company Snowflake (SNOW.N), opens new tab as its data collaboration provider. LA28's roughly $7 billion budget will be paid for with money from the International Olympic Committee and IOC sponsors as well as domestic partnerships, ticket sales, licensing, merchandise sales and other revenues. The LA28 Games will mark Los Angeles' third time hosting the Olympics and its first time hosting the Paralympic Games. The Games will take place from July 14-30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games from August 15-27, 2028.

Trump sues California over transgender athletes in girls' school sports
Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday sued California over state policies allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls' school sports, alleging that their participation violates federal anti-discrimination laws. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, claims that California's policies violate Title IX, which affords legal protection against sex discrimination. Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, in a statement took aim at Gavin Newsom, California's governor and a Trump antagonist seen as a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. Newsom in a March podcast interview with right-wing activist Charlie Kirk called transgender participation in girls' sports 'deeply unfair'. 'Not only is it 'deeply unfair,' it is also illegal under federal law,' Bondi said in a statement. 'This Department of Justice will continue its fight to protect equal opportunities for women and girls in sports.' A spokesperson for Newsom did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump, a Republican, has signed a series of executive orders restricting transgender rights, including a February directive to strip federal funding for any school that allows transgender women or girls to compete in female sports. The justice department under Trump has already filed a similar lawsuit against Maine and has made challenging transgender rights a major civil rights priority. The lawsuit alleges that state policies 'ignore undeniable biological differences between boys and girls' and diminish the integrity of girls' sports. Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights have said transgender athletes comprise a small minority of all school athletes and bans on their participation further stigmatize a vulnerable population. California's policies drew national attention earlier this year when a transgender girl competing in the state track and field championship won the high jump and triple jump and finished second in the long jump, an episode cited in the justice department's complaint. The lawsuit cites five alleged instances of transgender athletes taking part in girls' school sporting events in a state with nearly 6 million public school students, according to state data. It seeks a court order barring any school under the California Interscholastic Federation from allowing transgender athletes to take part in girls' sports competitions and to establish a process to compensate female athletes it alleges have been harmed by the state's policy. Newsom has repeatedly clashed with Trump, most recently over the president's decision to deploy national guard troops to Los Angeles, California's largest city, to quell anti-deportation protests that erupted after the Trump administration carried out workplace raids in the city. The feud has prompted several legal battles between the Trump administration and the largest US state. The justice department under Trump has already launched an investigation into hiring practices at the University of California system and has sued Los Angeles over policies restricting the city's cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Newsom sued the Trump administration over the national guard deployment.
