ASEAN Spirit On Display In Match Against Manchester United
PUTRAJAYA, May 25 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the upcoming friendly match between Manchester United and a team of ASEAN players symbolises the region's collective spirit and unity through sport.
He said the ASEAN side would be led by the Vietnam national football team coach and described the fixture at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, here, as more than just a football match.
'On May 28, as you know, Manchester United is coming here to play against the ASEAN team, led by the Vietnam national team coach. Unfortunately, he (Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh) will not be able to attend.
'I persuaded him to attend because the showcase is about the ASEAN spirit going up against Manchester United, which is no easy task. But in any case, I have extended the invitation,' he said.
Anwar was speaking at a joint press conference with Chinh here today.
The ASEAN All-Stars team will be coached by South Korean Kim Sang Sik, who recently led Vietnam to the 2024 ASEAN Championship title.
The friendly, which is part of Manchester United's pre-season tour, is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans and highlight the best of Southeast Asian football talent.
Meanwhile, Anwar lightened the mood further by teasing Vietnam ahead of the Malaysia-Vietnam clash, which would be the national team's second 2027 Asian Cup Group F qualifying match, scheduled for June 10.
'There will be a football match on June 10, Vietnam against Malaysia, and I've alerted Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, don't be too confident because we are really coming out this time, very prepared.

Kabaddi, in its seven-a-side form, has been a medal sport at the Asian Games since 1990. It will be included for the first time in the biennial Sea Games, with six gold medals up for grabs at the Sea Games from Dec 9-20.

The two-time Olympic medallist (one silver, one bronze) said the decision was made after careful consideration, as the injury would prevent her from competing safely or being at her best. 'I'm truly grateful for all the kind messages and concern for my wellbeing. I promise to take better care of my body as I focus on healing and prepare for the next opportunity to represent Malaysia,' Bernama reported her as saying in a Facebook post. Pandelela, 32, said she would continue to cheer on her fellow teammates in Singapore. 'Please join me in sending them our support, luck and prayers as they continue to compete for Malaysia,' she said. On Monday, Pandelela was competing with Lee Yiat Qing in the 10m platform synchronised event when she had to withdraw after two dives because of the injury, which she sustained earlier this month. Lee, 17, failed to advance to the 10m platform semi-finals after finishing outside the top 18 in the preliminaries at the OCBC Aquatic Centre today. She finished 29th with a total of 240.20 points after five dives. National swimmers Khiew Hoe Yean and Tan Khai Xin also failed to advance in their respective events. Khiew, a two-time SEA Games gold medallist, clocked 50.77s in the men's 100m freestyle to finish seventh in his heat and 50th out of 110 swimmers, while Tan clocked 2m 7.07s in the men's 200m medley to end up ninth in his heat and 40th overall.
