My ex never wanted to get married — when we broke up, he got engaged

Metro11-07-2025
'My ex of four years told me he never wanted to get married.'
Leaving her iPhone on a curb while she films an outfit check for a TikTok, Kendra reveals that shortly after they called it quits, her anti-marriage ex ended up getting engaged to the girl she was always 'suspicious' about.
A similar story is being played out in Lena Dunham's new Netflix series, Too Much. Starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe, the main character, Jessica, sees her seven-year relationship end after her boyfriend refuses to commit. Marriage just isn't his thing – or so she thought.
Naturally, a few months later, he's engaged to influencer Wendy Jones, played by Emily Ratajkowski.
The scenario feels especially cruel. A romance ends because your partner wants different things to you – only you soon find out that your desires were aligned, they just wanted that future with someone else.

Others have taken to the internet to share similar experiences. On Reddit, @ForeverNomad16 shared how she split with her fiancé after a nine-year engagement. 'He admitted he never wanted to get married and only proposed out of the fear of losing me,' she explains.

But, she later found out that he had, in fact, got hitched. 'Why couldn't he commit to me?' she asked Reddit.
In 2004, Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, part of the writing team behind Sex and The City, penned their own book, He's Just Not That Into You. The now-famous relationship bible theorised that any man who insists that they have 'issues' with marriage would, one day, end up married. Just not to you.
'Every man you have ever dated who has said he doesn't want to get married or doesn't believe in marriage, or has 'issues' with marriage, will, rest assured, someday be married,' the pair explain.
'It just will never be with you. Because he's not really saying he doesn't want to get married. He's saying he doesn't want to get married to you .'
The same idea ended up on-screen in Sex and The City, with Miranda Hobbes presenting the 'cab light theory.'
When he's not ready to settle down, his taxi light is off – but all of a sudden, it'll switch right on, available for whichever woman he happens to be with at that time. And if it's not you, that's too bad. In Miranda's view, it's 'not fate, it's dumb luck.'
Of course, marriage isn't for everyone. For some, it's a heteronormative, sexist institution – and you can, of course, love someone deeply without saying 'I do'.
But if they've been telling you it's a no-no, only for you to split up and spot their wedding snaps on Instagram, how are you meant to make sense of it all?
It's never an easy pill to swallow seeing your ex move on so quickly – least of all get engaged when it's the one thing they were never able to give you. You might blame yourself or wonder whether their new partner has something that you don't.
But as Lovehoney's sex and relationship expert Annabelle Knight says, the truth is that tying the knot with someone who isn't you, is never about you.
'It's more about timing, maturity, and their own internal journey. People change, and sometimes a breakup forces them to re-evaluate what they want in life,' she shares. More Trending
'It doesn't mean your relationship was meaningless – it means something for where they were at the time. Take it as a sign to be with someone who matches your values and life goals now , not someone you have to convince to grow with you.'
And what happens if you're in a relationship, and you're worried that the cab light theory might play out with you in the future? Happn's dating expert Claire Rénier says you need to be open not just with them, but with yourself, too.
'Have open conversations, think about what you want from the relationship and life in general, as well as whether your goals and ambitions align,' she tells Metro.

BBC denies editing Irish verse out of CMAT song after backlash

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video On Tuesday evening, BBC Radio 1 premiered CMAT's new single, Euro-Country, but the version that aired omitted a significant portion of the track: its Irish-language introduction. The first 40 seconds of the song, sung entirely in Gaeilge, were missing from the broadcast. It surprised listeners already familiar with the song, particularly given the significance of the language to the artist and the thematic weight it carries within the track. CMAT – real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson – addressed the omission on Instagram shortly after the premiere, stating that the decision to remove the Irish-language segment was not hers. 'I just want to say really quickly that it was not my decision to have the Irish language edited out of the first ever play of Euro-Country on radio,' she said in a video. 'I don't know if it was a mistake or what happened, however, they have just gotten in contact and said they are going to play the Irish language intro full version tomorrow to make up for it.' She added: 'I don't know who edited that out but it was crazy. Yeah, not my decision but they're fixing it!' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video BBC Radio 1 later responded to Metro's request for comment, clarifying that the edit was made by CMAT's record label, which supplied a radio version of the track that excluded the Irish-language opening. Their comments read: 'BBC Radio 1 did not edit the Irish language from this single, we broadcast the radio edit of CMAT's new song Euro-Country that was supplied by the record label. 'BBC Radio 1 has already played the full version that includes the Irish language intro today on 'Rickie Melvin and Charlie', and it will be played again on 'Going Home', and Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.' Maximum 1 entry per person. Attendance is governed by the Camp Bestival Terms and Conditions. Full T&Cs apply, see here. The song marks the lead single from CMAT's upcoming album, also titled Euro-Country, which is due for release at the end of August. It's a stylistic shift for the artist, wrapped in Europop kitsch and country flair, but its themes are deeply political. More Trending Among its most pointed lyrics is a reference to former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern: 'All the big boys, all the Berties, all the envelopes, yeah they hurt me. I was 12 when the dads started killing themselves all around me…' The line is a stark reflection of the devastation wrought by the 2008 financial crash and the long shadow it cast over communities like CMAT's hometown of Dunboyne, County Meath. While the incident appears to have been a miscommunication rather than a deliberate act of censorship, it nonetheless reignited conversation around representation and the place of minority languages in popular music. CMAT has had a busy summer, performing at Glastonbury and Primavera, and she's set to appear at All Together Now in Waterford next weekend. A headline show at Dublin's 3Arena is scheduled for December, marking a major milestone in her popularity in her home country. Got a story? Ozzy Osbourne's heartbreaking final texts to sister revealed days before death

Ozzy Osbourne's sister has opened up about the plans the rocker made in the final days before his death. The Black Sabbath frontman – real name John Osbourne – died on July 22 at the age of 76, with his family sharing a statement confirming the news. His death came just weeks after he appeared on stage for the final time, during the Back to the Beginning concert in Birmingham. Speaking about her loss, Jean Osbourne reflected on seeing his last performance earlier this month, and his desire to return to their hometown again. 'He was frail but it still came as a shock,' his sibling said in a new interview. 'He still had plans and things he wanted to do. We don't know the details of his death, it's still too early. It's just so sad.' Ozzy delighted fans when he appeared on a throne on stage at the Back to the Beginning event, and performed a short solo for the crowd. 'It's so good to be on this stage. You have no idea,' he said, thanking those who had gathered at the stadium 'from the bottom of [his] heart. 'You have no idea how I feel.' Recalling their final day together, she continued to the Mirror: 'We had an executive box in the stadium, and when I saw the sea of people waiting to see our John, I just broke down. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'We didn't really get a chance to chat much because it was such a chaotic visit. But in his last text to me he said he would be coming to Birmingham again. 'He said 'I can't wait to come back. We were hoping to see him this week.'' Ozzy, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2019, grew up in Birmingham and was one of six siblings – alongside Jean, Gillian, Paul, Iris and Tony. His eldest sister explained that the rocker messaged them while travelling to the concert, as he was 'blown away' by the crowds walking down the street where they used to live, on their journey to Aston Villa's stadium. 'Of the six siblings there's only three of us left now – me, Gillian and our brother Paul,' she added. 'We just can't believe he is gone and we won't be getting another phone call or text from him. 'Every week without fail he would get in touch, either by phone or text, to ask how we were all doing and what was going on.' Ozzy's death left the music world in mourning, with stars lining up to pay tribute to the rock legend on social media. More Trending His family, including wife Sharon Osbourne, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement yesterday, which read: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. 'We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.' Got a story?
