Legendary ITV police drama star 'helps police arrest real-life criminal'
An actor who spent nearly 25 years playing a police officer on The Bill has helped combat a real-life criminal. From 1984 to 2008 Jeff Stewart took on the role of PC Reg Hollis on the ITV drama series. The police procedural focused on the lives and work of one shift of police officers of all ranks, with the storylines following situations faced by uniformed officers working on the beat, as well as plainclothes detectives. Joining the series the year it began, Jeff first appeared in the premiere episode Funny Ol' Business – Cops & Robbers. By 2007 he was the last member of the cast remaining from that first episode. His character was written off the following year, with The Bill then ending in 2010. Now, it appears the 69-year-old actor took a leaf out of his character's playbook after stepping in to stop a crime. Earlier this week Southampton resident Mohamed Diallo, 29, appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court, where details of the incident were revealed. The court was that after Diallo shoplifted and attempted to escape on a bicycle, Jeff jumped into action by sitting on the suspect's legs after he fell from the bike, while officers handcuffed him. 'In policing you should always expect the unexpected, but this really wasn't on The Bill for this week,' a Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said. 'Officers making an arrest in Southampton were aided by none other than TV's Pc Reg Hollis during an incident on Wednesday 23 July. 'The officers, from Bargate Neighbourhoods Policing Team, were in the city in the afternoon when they were alerted by staff at Co-op in Ocean Way to a suspected shoplifter, who attempted to make good his escape on a bicycle.' 'To their surprise, local TV legend Jeff Stewart, who played Pc Hollis for 24 years in The Bill, came to their aid by sitting on the suspect's legs while officers put him in cuffs. 'Long since retired from Sun Hill station – but he's still got it.' In video of the arrest released by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, officers thanked Jeff before asking for a group photo. He replied: 'No, sure, man. Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years, in the TV show. Yeah, I played Reg.' Diallo was charged with five counts of theft, to which he pleaded guilty. Diallo was convicted of the theft of £17.25 worth of coffee from a Co-op on July 23, theft of £69.90 worth of coffee and food items on July 17, and £54.50 of alcohol and coffee from the same shop on July 14. More Trending He also admitted stealing £80 of wine from a Sainsburys on July 14 and £63 worth of alcohol from another on April 22. He was released on bail and will be sentenced on August 29. AI is used to cast Love Island
Artificial intelligence has been used to help casting in Love Island, it has been revealed. Dame Carolyn McCall, ITV 's chief executive, has suggested that use of the technology will increase as it has helped 'productivity gains' in the television industry. Speaking as the company announced its half-year results, she said: 'We will use AI in any way we can to make what we do more efficient. 'And a great example of that for me from [ITV] Studios is they're using a tool where it's a smart editing assistance and it's about speed and quality. 'And they used it for Love Island and casting this year,' she added. The popular reality dating series, launched in 2015, sees around 100,000 applications from members of the public for every season. It follows a group of contestants – known as the Islanders – who have to try and find love in the villa while avoiding elimination. It has become a ratings juggernaut for ITV since its launch. A spokesman for the company later explained that generative AI does not make any Love Island casting decisions, but is used to edit hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels for members of the team to then watch. Dame Carolyn told members of the media that this 'productivity gain means that they can go and do other things, which is really, really good'. A spokesman for ITV added that AI 'simply assists with the editing of audition tapes during the casting period'. They explained: 'We get thousands and thousands of applications every year and we hold face to face auditions. 'When we get to the stage of narrowing it down to hundreds of prospective Islanders and we want to share audition highlights on a reel with the ITV commissioning team, to support the casting decision, we use the software to edit the hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels. 'It means that the casting team can then spend more time researching and finding more prospective Islanders.' 'Latest round of cost-cutting' Announcing its latest results on Thursday, ITV said it had stepped up cost-cutting plans again following a slump in half-year profits. The broadcaster said it was slashing costs by another £15 million, on top of £30 million previously announced, with spend on content being trimmed. The group flagged using technology among efforts to drive the latest round of cost-cutting. It comes a week after Netflix said it had used the controversial technology in the production of one of its TV shows for the first time. Ted Sarandos, Netflix's co-chief executive, said visual effects were created by generative AI, which produces videos and images based on human-inputted prompts, in one of its original series titled The Eternaut. It was used to create a scene of a building collapsing in the Argentine science-fiction show. Mr Sarandos explained the technology had allowed the show's production to finish the scenes at a lower cost and 10 times faster than if they had used traditional special effects tools. The use of generative AI remains controversial in the entertainment world, however, with politicians and creatives fighting to protect artists' copyright amid concerns that AI will create content using others' work without their consent.

Megan was quick to tell Meg about what she saw of her partner Dejon and his actions with Andrada in Casa Amor. Although Andrada coupled up with Ben, she was keen to pursue something with Dejon and he openly flirted with her. Megan told Meg this was clear before she confessed that since the pair made things exclusive then she had noticed a shift in Dejon and his behaviour. But viewers think that Megan should have been instructed not to tell her co-stars about what she had seen as to not influence their decisions in moving forward with their relationships. Another then added: "I actually don't think it's fair that megan gets to come and tell the others how it's being perceived on the tv #LoveIsland #LoveIslandUK." The messages continued to roll in as someone said: "This is wrong man! Megan shouldn't be able to tell them what is being said outside. Meg don't even wanna hear the TRUTH!" A fourth penned: "It's rubbing me the wrong way that Megan has left the villa, watched the show, seen the public's perception, and is allowed to come and relay this information back to meg and helena." Watch moment Harry admits he still has feelings for Shakira after star threatened to quit villa Before another went on to state: "You're telling me Megan was allowed to talk about absolutely everything that was being shown and what the public reaction has been to every single islander? "NEVER BRING DUMPED ISLANDERS BACK AGAIN." Musical theatre performer Megan lost her place in the Mallorca villa after viewers voted her the least 'favourite girl'. One fan ranted on X: 'The fact she's on my TV when I voted her out? What happened to democracy?' Another said they had lodged a complaint with Ofcom and said: 'Megan has been out of that villa for weeks and had the chance to read all of the public's opinions and it's so close to the end, she's pretty much guaranteed a spot in the final.' She returned with Spanish lad Blu, who was also dumped earlier in the series. Fans are not charged to take part in voting for Love Island on ITV's dedicated mobile phone app. But the voting terms and conditions state: 'The producers of the programme may in their discretion introduce an Islander seen in earlier stages of the competition who was previously evicted.' 4
