Preparation for digital data collection, caste enumeration on: MoS Nityanand Rai
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed that a two-day conference was held in the national capital on July 3 and 4. The event was attended by Directors of Census Operations, senior officials from the Directorates of Census Operations, and officers from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India.
The Minister added that the conference focused on the roadmap for the upcoming Census and related activities. Key topics discussed included finalisation of the administrative unit framework, data collection through mobile applications, management and monitoring via the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal, self-enumeration, training of census personnel, and other related matters.
Rai also pointed out that the preparation for Census 2027 started with the publication of gazette notification dated June 16, 2025 expressing the intent of the Government to conduct a Population Census. The Central government earlier last month announced that the Population Census-2027 will be conducted in two phases, and for the first time, it will also include enumeration of castes.

No of detainees on rise, but no plan to expand centres, says Gurgaon DC
Gurgaon: The number of detainees at special holding centres is increasing, deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said on Thursday, without disclosing the exact count of people held at such facilities on suspicion of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The DC confirmed that four such centres are operational now, but there is no immediate plan to expand the number as the administration hasn't received requests to set up new facilities. These centres are tasked with holding detainees until their identities are verified and arrangements for deportation are finalised. "Adequate provisions for food and water have been made at detention centres, with administrative officials appointed to oversee the facilities and ensure the detainees' basic needs are met," Kumar said. In addition to basic amenities, the administration is coordinating with central agencies to arrange transportation to deportat illegal immigrants. This follows a May 2 directive from the MHA, which mandates identification and deportation of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas residing illegally in India.

Fearing defeat, oppn raising poll boycott threat: NDA
Patna: NDA leaders on Thursday reacted sharply to the opposition threat that they may boycott assembly elections in Bihar over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Union minister of state for home, Nityanand Rai, said the RJD already is fearing defeat and its leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has already started looking for an excuse. "Tejashwi knows very well that in the upcoming assembly elections, RJD is going to be defeated again and the public is going to bless the NDA again," Rai said. Inclusion of BJP leaders in BHU exec council sparks controversy
VARANASI Nomination of three BJP leaders –- former Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey, Kashi region BJP president Dileep Patel and Varanasi mayor Ashok Tiwari - as members of the Banaras Hindu University's executive council came as a surprise for many and drew criticism from UP Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Rai. Several former students also questioned these nominations. BJP leaders in the executive council said they would work towards making the BHU a world class university. We had raised this issue last year, saying that an executive council should be formed and it should include educationists, scientists and renowned academicians,' said Rai. He said, 'Ironically, instead of giving place to academicians and scientists, three politicians have been made members of the executive council. The Union ministry of education sent a letter to the BHU, informing the university about the nomination, a BHU official confirmed. According to the letter addressed to BHU registrar, the eight members are:former Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey, Varanasi mayor Ashok Tiwari, educationist and social worker Dileep Patel, Delhi University vice-chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh, Prof Omprakash Bhartiya of department of sociology, BHU, Prof Shweta Prasad of department of sociology, BHU and prof (retired) Bechan Lal of department of zoology, and prof (retired) Uday Pratap Shahi.
