CEO shares deceptively simple interview question he's asked for 15 years: 'Apple or Android?'

For job seekers, interviews can feel like a maze of unpredictable questions, but some CEOs have revealed the one simple question that can reveal more than it seems about every candidate. Indeed CEO Chris Hyams has revealed that he has asked the same question for over 15 years to as many as 3,000 candidates: 'Do you have an iPhone or an Android, and why?'
The question might seem like a casual icebreaker, but Hyams claims it reveals everything he needs to know about the candidate's decision-making process. He said it starts a small discussion that reveals how individuals make choices, their personal preferences and their adaptability.
Even after asking the same questions to almost every candidate, Hyams notes he always gets varied answers. He said most candidates who chose iPhone cited long-term brand loyalty, while others spoke of specific apps they use, revealing their interests. He also asked them what they wanted to change about their chosen platform to understand their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
However, CEOs' approach of using unconventional interview questions to assess potential hires is not unique to Hyams. Former TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer asks candidates to discuss a challenging project to see how they dealt with it using either teamwork or problem-solving skills.
Similarly, Wisp CEO Monica Cepak asks candidates to describe the most complex problem they've solved at work, using their response to assess critical thinking and cross-functional collaboration. Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, prefers a more straightforward query: 'How soon can you start?" and reads between the lines.
If a currently employed candidate says they can begin immediately, he sees it as a red flag for loyalty. Meanwhile, StockX CEO Scott Cutler throws in a brain teaser: 'How many degrees separate the minute and hour hands of a clock at 3:15?', not to test math skills, but to observe how candidates think under pressure.

First, Apple faced President Donald Trump's threat to slap tariffs on its products manufactured outside the US. And now, China, sensing an opportunity, is moving fast to stymie the iPhone maker's India plans. Foxconn, Apple's largest supplier, has quietly pulled Chinese engineers and technicians from its Indian plants. Over 300 Chinese workers have left Foxconn's iPhone assembly facilities in India in the past two months. Not just the workforce, Beijing is also curbing technology transfers and tightening controls on equipment exports to India and Southeast Asia, Apple's key hubs outside China, Bloomberg reported. This is to protect China's long-term interests in case tariffs come knocking from the West. What this means for Apple Foxconn's move will hurt Apple as it gears up to make the iPhone 17. India already accounts for 20% of global iPhone output and was hoping to scale further. Trump had aimed the tariff gun at India's Southeast Asian peers, and the country was hoping to pick up the slack. This is also significant, as data showed that nearly all the iPhones exported by Foxconn from India went to the US between March and May, far above the 2024 average of 50% and a clear sign of Apple's efforts to bypass high US tariffs imposed on China. But Vietnam, another key Apple manufacturer, has moved faster and struck a deal with Washington that allows duty-free American imports and caps tariffs on Vietnamese goods at 20%, far below Trump's proposed 46%. This is while India waits for its interim trade agreement ahead of the July 9 deadline. India angle India relies on both a skilled workforce and high-end tech from China. So far, the impact has been limited, but experts say it could worsen as India is pinning its hopes on Apple to become a manufacturing powerhouse. However, Union minister for electronics, IT, railways and information & broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has said the country plans to develop its own electronics manufacturing abilities and reduce dependence on China. At an ET Roundtable in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said that India is ramping up domestic production in a 'very methodical and sustained way', aiming for a 38% value addition over the next five years. 'De-risking is learning the skills and making it here and developing our own supply chain, which is what we are doing,' he said. China currently accounts for 38% value addition in electronics assembled in India. Vaishnaw said India is working to reduce its dependence on Chinese know-how and will lean on ecosystems in Taiwan, the US, and South Korea, alongside its own talent.

Pune: Over three weeks since its launch, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) dedicated "PCMC Pothole Management" app — designed to streamline pothole reporting — is struggling to gain widespread public adoption. Launched on June 1, the app was intended to provide residents with an easy way to report road defects in their neighborhoods. However, civic officials indicate that most citizens are still relying on established platforms, with only a handful embracing the new tool. A senior PCMC official confirmed that the majority of complaints continue to be filed through the older "Smart Saarthi" app or by calling the municipal helpline. Since its introduction, the new pothole app has received just 150 complaints, averaging just six to seven reports per day. The civic body is collaborating with its technical team to resolve this issue and make the app available for all residents. Some users also reported technical glitches like delayed OTPs during registration and errors while submitting complaints. Additionally, the app requires users to capture and upload a live photo of the pothole at the time of lodging a complaint, which some residents find inconvenient. "Often, we take a photo while passing by and upload it later, but the new app doesn't allow this flexibility, which could discourage people from using it," a resident of Pimpri said.

Digital Rules? Not EU's Way Madrid: In 2024, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) released a draft ex-ante digital competition law, following the lead of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). But does India need a new law that is an inspiration from a dubious DMA or is existing competition law enough?India's Competition Act 2002-especially in the wake of significant amendments made in 2023-offers a flexible and comprehensive framework to address anticompetitive conduct in the digital economy. It also includes sections that cover such core digital concerns as deep discounting, bundling, self-preferencing, exclusive tie-ups and the misuse of data by dominant platforms- without automatically prejudging whether such conduct is anti-competitive. CCI has also demonstrated that it can apply these provisions, as it did when it imposed penalties on Google for anticompetitive conduct in the Android ecosystem and Play Store policies. More recently, Meta and WhatsApp were fined for unfair data-sharing conditions imposed on users. CCI's scrutiny of MakeMyTrip, Flipkart and Uber demonstrates its ability to engage with platform-specific issues under existing legal mandate. While some jurisdictions have opted for 'ex-ante' digital competition laws-such as DMA-India would be wise to avoid this path. Ex-ante regimes often rely on absolute prohibitions and structural presumptions, which may inadvertently suppress innovative or pro-competitive conduct because it involves scale or the blueprint for many ex-ante digital competition rules, has been criticised by competition experts like OECD's Frederic Jenny for rigidity and potential to hinder innovation in fast-moving markets. Indeed, DMA has produced dubious outcomes in the has taken note. The draft Digital Competition Bill (DCB) 2024 proposed ex-ante obligations for 'systemically significant digital enterprises', drawing inspiration from foreign frameworks like DMA. But it was met with concern from industry and legal experts, who warned that such sweeping, pre-emptive rules risked stifling innovation and overregulating a still-developing digital economy. That proposal was put on the backburner, a prudent pause that underscores the need to pursue a tailored, evidence-based approach rather than adopt a one-size-fits-all regulatory model. Indeed, India's experience offers an alternative. In the landmark v. Google case, CCI displayed regulatory restraint, carefully weighing the need to preserve innovation. That decision reflected a more sophisticated understanding of digital markets, where conduct must be judged in context, rather than employing broad regulatory prohibitions that ignore efficiencies and procompetitive benefits. Furthermore, CCI has shown flexibility in defining relevant markets in digital cases, such as in Snapdeal and Meru v. Uber, where evolving business models required novel interpretations. Despite effectiveness of this legal framework, enforcement delays remain a significant concern. In CCI v. SAIL case, the Supreme Court highlighted the need for time-bound proceedings to ensure meaningful remedies and deterrence. The ability to enforce the law swiftly and decisively is what will ultimately determine the regime's than replicating foreign models, India should prioritise improving how its current system functions. This means faster case resolution, better resources for CCI and development of sector-specific guidelines that retain flexibility while offering clarity. Moreover, continuous training and upskilling of enforcement personnel are essential. That's why the proposed Digital Markets and Data Unit within CCI is a welcome development, as it promises to bring much-needed technical expertise and sector-specific knowledge to bear on increasingly complex pace of technological change in the digital economy exceeds the ability of prescriptive rules to remain relevant. A principles-based, evidence-driven regulatory approach-such as the one embodied in the Competition Act-is far better suited to this 2023 amendments bolstered this framework by introducing a deal value threshold for merger scrutiny, a voluntary settlement and commitment mechanism, and significantly higher penalties. Together, these amendments serve to equip CCI with modern tools to regulate proactively without becoming focus should now shift to building institutional capacity, streamlining procedures and ensuring timely enforcement. These improvements will ensure that Indian markets remain healthy, efficient and a global climate of regulatory overreach, India's approach should continue to remain principled and pragmatic: grounded in a refusal to legislate prematurely and a commitment to strengthen an already sound framework rooted in economic analysis that has served it well across sectors as varied as telecom, cement, pharmaceuticals and aviation.
