Rekha reviews corporation's 20-day cleanliness drive in city
Municipal Corporation of Delhi
(MCD) released a zone-wise progress report on its 20-day '
cleanliness drive
', conducted across all 12 zones. The initiative, part of the larger
Swachh Delhi campaign
, focused on cleaning, encroachment removal and issuance of challans, and was met with strong public support.
The campaign saw 3,500 kilometres of roads cleaned, with Rohini Zone leading the effort, followed by Najafgarh, Karol Bagh, and south zone. Authorities issued 11,131 challans and seized 5,932 illegal materials, clearing 186.5 km of encroached roads. Nearly 50,000 illegal posters, banners, and hoardings were also removed.
To address monsoon-related waterlogging, MCD removed 19,892 metric tons of silt from local drains.
Additionally, the Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) department cleared 1,372,276 metric tons of silt from 27 major drains, with a deadline to complete remaining work by May 31, 2025. CM Gupta emphasised that silt disposal must be done in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Safety improvements were also made, including repairs to 4,140 streetlights and the installation of 285 new ones. On average, 33,809 sanitation workers participated in the drive daily.
Night-time cleaning was carried out in 418 major markets, and 283 Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) were engaged to promote community participation.
Efforts to manage stray animals included relocation to gaushalas, dog vaccinations, and the sealing of unauthorized dairies. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) also ran a parallel campaign in its 14 circles, focusing on construction and demolition (C&D) waste, encroachments, and civic sanitation.

Maoist couple surrenders before Andhra Pradesh DGP
Last Updated: Amaravati, Jul 26 (PTI) A Maoist couple – J Nagaraju and M Jyothiswari – surrendered before Andhra Pradesh DGP Harish Kumar Gupta on Saturday, officials said. Police said Nagaraju, who is also known as Kamlesh, had been a Maoist for about 34 years and last worked as the in-charge of East Bastar Division committee and was also a part of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal committee, said an official press release. 'J Nagaraju, a senior Maoist who had worked in the Maoist party for about 34 years and his wife M Jyothiswari surrendered," said Gupta, addressing a press conference. According to the DGP, the couple was disenchanted with the failures of the Maoist Party and its central committee's policies. Gupta noted that Nagaraju and Jyothiswari had played a key role as Maoists in Chhattisgarh and added that Nagaraju carried a bounty of Rs 20 lakh and Jyothiswari Rs 5 lakh. As instant relief for the surrendered couple, the DGP said a cheque of Rs 20,000 each has been handed over to them. Delhi Govt Seeks Supreme Court Review Of Age-Based Vehicle Ban
The Delhi government has approached the Supreme Court seeking a review of the 'End-of-Life-Vehicles' (ELVs) ban. The government argues that it penalises middle-class vehicle owners without any scientific backing. It is to be noted that the government is required to phase out petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in the national capital region under a 2018 Supreme Court order and a National Green Tribunal follow-up. Delhi government officials argued that these age-based standards overlook advancements in vehicle emissions technology, especially considering the April 2020 introduction of Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) standards. Also Read: Tata Waiting Period Extends Over 6 Months; Check Details As per Indian Express, the application filed by Rekha Gupta government said, "the road-worthiness of a vehicle is a technical and scientific issue that must be linked to actual emissions as tested and recorded by mechanisms as set out under the Motor Vehicles Act, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, etc., as opposed to blanket ban on the basis of age which is unlinked to actual emissions." Taking the argument further, Environment Minister Majinder Singh Sirsa mentioned that the government's review application emphasizes the need for data-backed assessment, rather than broad limitation, on the actual emissions produced by each vehicle, regardless of its age. Additionally, the government argues that owners of properly maintained vehicles are unfairly affected by the ban, which is implemented without considering maintenance, usage patterns, or PUC compliance, according to the plea. The Delhi government's petition highlights that around 2.8 million BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles are registered in the city. It argues that the current age-based ban could exclude compliant vehicles and calls for a scientific analysis by the Commission for Air Quality Management to assess if these bans effectively improve air quality in Delhi-NCR. This comes after a campaign targeting a fuel ban for older cars faced public backlash and was halted due to operational challenges.

In blow to Delhi Police, revenue department gets power to grant licences to cinema halls, theatres
Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena on Saturday withdrew the power of granting licences to cinema halls and theatres from the Delhi Police, and authorised the revenue department as the licensing authority. According to an official from the L-G's office, the move is aimed at further liberalising the licensing regime and promoting ease of doing business in Delhi. 'A committee headed by the DM (district magistrate)/DC (deputy commissioner) will have the authority to grant licences under the Cinematograph Act, 1952. The committee comprising five officers will make recommendations for grant of such licences,' the official said. The committee will comprise the deputy commissioner of the respective Municipal Corporation of Delhi zone, a structural engineering or building expert nominated by the public works department secretary, a fire safety expert nominated by the chief fire officer of the Delhi Fire Service, an electrical system expert nominated by the secretary of the power department, and a representative of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to be nominated by the DC, the official added. The move follows a recent decision wherein the powers of issuing licences for seven business categories—swimming pools, eateries, hotels, guest houses, discotheques, videogame parlours, amusement parks and auditoriums—were withdrawn from the Delhi Police. The Delhi Police now has the power to issue licences regarding arms, ammunition and explosives. 'The objective is to ease the licensing processes and create a conducive business atmosphere sans red tape in Delhi,' the official further said. The L-G has issued directions to the police commissioner to direct officials concerned to refrain from dealing with matters related to the grant of licences under the Cinematograph Act, with immediate effect, he said. In a statement last month, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said the reforms were in line with the Centre's vision of 'Maximum Governance-Minimum Government' and 'Ease of Doing Business'. 'Union Home Minister Amit Shah has clearly stated that the police force should be relieved from non-core duties so that their energy and resources can be focused on law and order, security, and crime control,' Gupta had said.
