Candidates who cleared TET in 2013 plead for priority in appointment of govt. school teachers in the new academic year
At a press conference held here, representatives of the TET SGTs from various districts, who had cleared the exam since 2013, appealed to the authorities concerned to prioritise their appointment.
'On Labour Day, we appeal to the government to fill the elementary school posts lying vacant since 2013. At least 40% of the qualified candidates are in the 40-45 age group. We have passed the qualifying exams after studying two types of school syllabi. Despite this, we are unemployed. The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), when calling for certificate verification, overlooks us because of marks-based assessment criteria. We do not have the skills or the mindset to write yet another qualifying examination. Despite our educational qualification, we are forced to take up any available job to make ends meet,' said E.R. Tamilvalavan, coordinator of the group.
The TRB announced 2,728 staff vacancies on July 21, 2024. There are 4,460 government schools with 5,804 vacancies in the State. 'In the 2023-24 academic year, over 1 lakh children were admitted to elementary schools. If the authorities want to improve school education, they must increase the number of posts and recruit more teachers. TET candidates like us could be considered on the basis of our seniority and subject knowledge,' said Hemalatha, a science teacher.
The 2013 TET SGTs also urged the authorities to rescind the Government Order 149, which mandates an additional examination for teachers.

The government plans to eventually raise the marriage advance to a significant Rs 5,00,000 for all government employees and teachers in the future. What Is Marriage Advance? The Tamil Nadu Marriage Advance Fee refers to a financial assistance scheme provided by the Tamil Nadu government to its employees and teachers to help cover marriage expenses for themselves, their sons, or their daughters.

Absenteeism in public examinations has come down, says Minister Anbil Mahesh
Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Wednesday said that there has been a significant reduction in absenteeism in public examinations over the last two years. Speaking to the reporters after a review meeting regarding the State Level Achievement Survey (SLAS) in Pudukottai, he said that there has been a notable improvement in the last two years in reducing absenteeism in public exams and school dropouts. 'Efforts have been taken to make the absentees appear for supplementary exams and convince the parents of the dropouts to send their children back to school. We are keen on preventing students from leaving the education system.' He added that block-level review has been conducted in the district, and the low-performing block has been instructed to improve its performance by next year. When asked about the steps to improve infrastructure in government schools, Mr. Poyyamozhi said that the infrastructural needs, such as new classrooms, toilets, etc, in each school have been noted and would be fulfilled soon. So far, over 8,000 classrooms have been constructed in the State at a cost of ₹5,500 crore, he added. Earlier, Mr. Poyyamozhi held a review meeting for the school heads of government and aided schools in Thanjavur. The School Education Department conducted the SLAS for students of classes III, V and IIIV in government and aided schools to identify learning gaps and plan academic interventions. As many as 11,550 Class III students from 1,374 schools, 12,540 Class V students from 1,379 schools and 10,663 Class IIIV students from 548 schools took the exam, and the district secured 58.41 per cent in SLAS. Steps would be taken to carry out the survey and improve the learning ability in children, he added.

Stalin defends Dravidian model of governance, slams critics
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday strongly defended the achievements of his government's Dravidian model, particularly in the domain of temple administration and social welfare, while taking a veiled dig at detractors who "were unable to tolerate the progress being made". Addressing a mass wedding ceremony organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, the Chief Minister said: "True devotees are able to recognise the accomplishments of this government, which is founded on the principle of 'everything for everyone'. But those filled with hatred and bent on dividing society are unable to digest this." He went a step further to criticise individuals who, he alleged, disguise themselves as pious devotees but are driven by political animosity. "They cannot accept the fact that temples are being administered with transparency and social justice,' he remarked. Stalin listed several achievements of the HR&CE Department over the last four years, most notably the consecration of 3,170 temples across the state — a figure he said was unprecedented. He also pointed out the increasing popularity of public service initiatives under the department, such as free weddings, Annadhanam (free meals), and heritage restoration projects. Referring to a recent cartoon published in a Tamil weekly magazine that mocked him and his cabinet, the Chief Minister dismissed it as a product of a "long-standing grudge". "These criticisms don't affect me. I draw strength from them and will continue to work for the welfare of the people." He clarified that the cartoon was not an act of spiritual concern, but a deliberate attempt to ridicule his administration. "Their aim is not to serve devotion or religion, but to attack our efforts and mock our ministers. Nevertheless, we will remain steadfast in our commitment to serving true devotees with dedication," he said. Stalin also used the opportunity to bless and congratulate the newlywed couples at the event. Urging them to name their children in Tamil, he wished them a life of health, happiness, and mutual respect. The event is part of the HR&CE Department's broader social outreach, aimed at making temple services more inclusive and people-centric.
