Kanwar Yatra 2025: All meat shops on Delhi route to shut from tomorrow, minister calls most 'illegal'

Time of India6 hours ago
Delhi's Culture and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra announced that all meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra route in the national capital will be shut during the Sawan month this year. The decision, according to him, has been taken to respect the religious sentiments of the lakhs of devotees, or kanwariyas, who pass through Delhi during the annual pilgrimage.

will take place from July 11 to July 23, drawing devotees from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi. While inspecting the yatra route from Apsara Border to Karol Bagh with Delhi mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Mishra told reporters that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government have agreed to close all meat shops on the route, not just the illegal ones.
'Most of these meat shops are illegal,' Mishra said, adding that MCD will soon issue an official order. This is the first time such a directive is being implemented in Delhi.

Massive preparations for devotees
The minister visited several areas along the yatra route including Apsara Border, Dilshad Garden, Seelampur, Shastri Park, Kashmere Gate, and Karol Bagh, to check on arrangements. He instructed officials to make sure that traffic remains smooth and that the yatra is not disrupted.
Delhi Police have also mapped out major pedestrian corridors for the kanwariyas. These include:

Apsara Border to Rajokri Border via Shahdara, ISBT, and NH8
Bhopura to Singhu and Tikri Border via Seelampur and Peeragarhi
Additional routes from Bhopura to ISBT Bridge, Maharajpur to Badarpur, and Kalindi Kunj to MB Road
A grand welcome for Kanwariyas
Kapil Mishra said that Delhi is preparing for a grand welcome this year. 'In Delhi, about 2.5 to 3 crore people take part in the Kanwar Yatra. This year's arrangements will be historic,' he said. The government plans to set up grand welcome gates, and there will also be flower showers to greet the pilgrims.
He also mentioned that the Chief Minister has directed that financial aid be transferred directly to the accounts of Kanwar committees. Free electricity will be provided for the camps, and a single-window system has been created for all permissions. There will also be arrangements for water, barricading, lighting, and sanitation.
Joint effort by MLAs and government
For the first time, a joint inspection team of four MLAs, Anil Sharma, Tilak Ram Gupta, Sanjay Goyal, and Pradyumn Rajput, has been formed under the leadership of the minister. Mishra said this shows the Delhi government's strong commitment to making sure that kanwariyas face no problems during their journey.
'We want to make sure every devotee feels welcomed and safe. Delhi is ready to immerse itself in the festive spirit of Sawan,' he added.

Shravani Mela Begins, Lakhs Of Kanwariyas Embark On 108 Km Pilgrimage

Deoghar: The world-renowned Shravani Mela commenced on Thursday at Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, with lakhs of Kanwariyas thronging the sacred town to begin their month-long pilgrimage during the holy month of Sawan. The fair was formally inaugurated at Dumma, on the Jharkhand-Bihar border, in a traditional ceremony marked by Vedic chants. Jharkhand ministers Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Deepika Pandey Singh, and Sanjay Prasad Yadav jointly inaugurated the event. Baba Baidyanath Dham houses Kamna Mahadev, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it one of the holiest Shaivite shrines. As per custom, Kanwariyas fetch holy water from the Uttarvahini Ganga in Sultanganj, Bihar, and walk 108 km barefoot to offer it at the Deoghar shrine. This annual religious procession is considered the longest religious fair in Asia, covering a 108 km route from Sultanganj to Deoghar. The pilgrimage, which began on Thursday, coinciding with Guru Purnima, saw thousands of Kanwariyas filling the roads chanting "Bol Bam", creating a spiritual spectacle. The Jharkhand government has estimated that 50 to 60 lakh devotees from across India and abroad are likely to attend the fair this year. To manage the massive footfall, the state government has made elaborate arrangements for accommodation, safety, sanitation, and information dissemination. Tent cities equipped with essential amenities have been established at Kothiya and Baghmara along the Deoghar-Sultanganj route, providing rest areas for thousands of pilgrims. Facilities such as bathing rooms, toilets, medical camps, and information centres have been set up at key locations across the mela zone. The fair has adopted a digital format, allowing devotees to access real-time information through QR codes on their mobile phones. A dedicated chatbot service is also available for assistance. Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh said that keeping in view the heavy influx of devotees, all VIP, VVIP, and out-of-turn darshan privileges have been suspended for the entire month of Sawan to ensure smooth crowd flow and fairness. Additionally, touch worship of the Jyotirlinga is not permitted. Devotees can offer holy water through Argha -- a ritual vessel placed inside the temple to facilitate offerings. To help pilgrims, shuttle services have been started for those arriving by bus. Holding points, clean drinking water, accommodation facilities, toilets, healthcare camps, and sanitation services are being closely monitored. Officials, magistrates, and police personnel deployed in the area have been instructed to perform their duties.
