NEET UG 2025 result allowed for all centres except 11 in Indore: Court order

India Today19-05-2025
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has allowed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to go ahead and declare the NEET UG 2025 results, but with a key restriction. The NTA cannot release results for 11 exam centres in Indore that were affected by a power cut on exam day, May 4.This decision came after a petition was filed by a student who claimed her NEET UG performance was disrupted due to the outage. Earlier, the court had paused the announcement of NEET UG results 2025 across the country until the matter was heard.advertisementBut on Friday, Justice Subodh Abhyankar revised that order after hearing arguments from Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Deputy Solicitor General Himanshu Joshi.NEET UG COUNSELLING A PRIORITY
The justices pointed out that only 11 centres in Indore were impacted, and there was no reason to delay the results for the rest of India. They requested that the NTA be allowed to release NEET results for all unaffected centres so that students don't miss out on counselling. On the other side, the petitioner's lawyer argued that if she didn't get a timely re-exam, she might miss the NEET UG 2025 counselling process. The court finally ruled in favour of the NTA's request, saying: 'The respondents may be allowed to declare the results for all the other centres in India, except the affected centres at Indore, in which the power failure was faced by the students.'advertisementThe court also asked the NTA to submit details of those specific centres while filing their response. The next hearing is scheduled for Monday, May 19.Meanwhile, NTA is also dealing with separate action against over 250 students and aspirants for using unfair means in the NEET UG 2024 exam. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.(With PTI inputs)

Computer labs in schools to get ₹400-crore makeover, says Punjab education minister

Punjab school education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday announced a ₹400 crore plan to revamp computer labs in government schools. The announcement came during a 'Dialogue with Teachers' session held at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Sangrur. The event aimed to gather direct feedback from educators. Punjab government plans to revamp computer labs in government schools has been mooted. While addressing the teachers, Bains highlighted the transformative strides in the state's education system, noting that the government schools are now globally recognised. He emphasised that the government's approach is centred on delivering tangible results, rather than resorting to superficial measures. The minister assured that teachers' issues would be addressed. He also said that the third batch of teachers would be sent abroad for training, and the selection would be based solely on merit. Additionally, the minister highlighted initiatives, such as promotion for lecturers, appointment of 400 new principals and improvements in school infrastructure, including increased access to proper seating and sanitation facilities. Furthermore, the education minister stated that an impressive 845 government school students qualified the highly competitive National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), while 265 students successfully cleared the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Mains this year. This showcases the school education department's commitment to fostering academic excellence and empowering students to excel in the country's most challenging competitive exams, he said. The minister described the 'Dialogue with Teachers' initiative as a pioneering platform where the administration actively listens to and values teachers' insights, fostering a collaborative approach to education reform.

Delhi High Court upholds action against assistant professor at DU in sexual harassment case

The Delhi High Court has upheld the compulsory retirement of an assistant professor of political science in Delhi University's Bharati College over multiple allegations of sexual harassment by students. The Court described the accused's conduct as 'so profane' that it refrained from reproducing in its judgment the objectionable messages he sent to the complainants. In the July 17 judgment, Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that, 'Teachers shape the career of young aspiring students for a better future... The act of sexual harassment done by these very teachers, who are considered our guides and mentors, against young female students who have just attained majority, has a deleterious effect on the psyche of such students.' The accused had challenged the orders of compulsory retirement issued by the college's governing body in December 2020. Four complaints were filed against him — three by current students of Bharati College and one by a former student — alleging sexual innuendoes/advances through Facebook chats and WhatsApp messages. The complaints surfaced in February 2018, shortly after a video of students confronting the professor about his conduct became public. The video sparked student protests and demands for an inquiry. The matter was referred to the college's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), in line with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act), and UGC regulations. The Court noted that the ICC's inquiry report of August 28, 2018, found all charges against the professor to be substantiated through both documentary and oral evidence. 'The testimony of each of the complainants remained unimpeached and resultantly, this Court finds no reason to question the veracity of the ICC's analysis of the evidence and statements,' the Court held. The Court rejected the professor's arguments of procedural impropriety, noting that it found no violation of rules in how the ICC was constituted or how the inquiry was conducted.
