Final E-ART route proposal expected by August

The Sun19-05-2025
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The final alignment proposal for the Elevated Automated Rapid Transit (E-ART) system is expected to be announced this August, the Johor State Legislative Assembly was told today.
State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, said it is subject to the outcome of the Request for Proposal (RFP) evaluation by the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS).
'UKAS has initiated the RFP process for the E-ART system implementation as part of efforts to complete the integrated transportation network in Greater Johor Bahru.
'The E-ART system will cover three main corridors, namely Skudai, Tebrau and Iskandar Puteri, and will be integrated at the main interchange station at Bukit Chagar, ultimately supporting the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS),' he said at the assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Ramlee Bohani (BN-Kempas) about the government's measures to tackle the worsening traffic congestion in Johor Bahru, including short—and long-term plans to address the problem.
He said the E-ART system will significantly ease traffic congestion, improve daily mobility and support the state's low-carbon agenda.
Mohamad Fazli was previously reported to have announced the development of the E-ART system, which involves 32 stations and is estimated to cost nearly RM7 billion.
He said the state government has set up the Greater JB Special Traffic Dispersal Committee, which has identified 77 congestion areas and taken action in more than 20 locations.
'This committee has also proposed measures such as the installation of lane barriers, traffic information boards, and enforcement during peak hours, which have been presented at the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Congestion and Safety.
'...the dispersal plan includes the closure of Jalan Ledang leading to the Skudai Highway (the exit ramp from Taman Johor to Skudai), which has successfully reduced traffic pressure in the area,' he said.
Mohamad Fazli said the government is also studying the need to increase road capacity, including widening roads, building new bypasses, carrying out regular maintenance, and implementing more modern traffic management systems to support future economic growth and traffic density.
'Therefore, the state government has submitted a list of 18 proposed projects to the Highway Network Development Plan (HNDP) consulting services to review projects that should be prioritised for approval,' he added.

Dr Sim: Sarawak govt plans to build 20,000 affordable homes under 13MP

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the move comes in response to a growing mismatch between the number of available housing units and the actual number of households across the state. Speaking at the 2025 Azmi Real Estate Annual Gala Dinner here last night, Dr Sim cited 2023 statistics showing that Sarawak had about 770,000 housing units, while the number of heads of households was only around 630,000. 'This shows an excess of around 140,000 housing units, largely due to rural-to-urban migration and the purchase of homes for investment purposes,' he was quoted as saying in a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Dr Sim, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, stressed that the state government is working hard to correct this imbalance and ensure housing development meets the real needs of the people. 'Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), we only managed to build 3,000 units. But under the 13MP, from next year until 2030, the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU) is proposing a total of 20,000 units. That's a jump from 3,000 to 20,000,' he said. To make homeownership more accessible, especially for low-income earners, Dr Sim said the state has introduced a number of support measures, including a RM10,000 deposit assistance scheme for first-time homebuyers and housing loans with interest rates as low as one per cent for the B40 group. He added that these low-interest loans are provided through the state's own financial body, Mutiara Mortgage and Credit, for homes priced under RM300,000. 13th Malaysia Plan affordable housing Dr Sim Kui Hian lead

M'sian-owned Zchwantech Titan showcases national digital identity platform to Timor Leste gov't

MALAYSIAN-OWNED technology firm Zchwantech Titan Lda has successfully conducted a high-level technology showcase for the Timor Leste government by presenting its flagship National Digital Identity platform as part of the country's broader vision to modernise public services and accelerate digital governance. The strategic engagement took place during a recent official working visit by senior Timor Leste government representatives to Malaysia. This was when the regional digital identity systems specialist demonstrated its secure biometric-powered digital identity solution which is designed to integrate key public and private sectors spanning banking, healthcare, telecommunications, education and civil registries to the Timor Leste delegation. Zchwantech's presentation was well received with Timor Leste's government officials expressing strong interest and satisfaction in the platform's potential to support the country's E-Governance Roadmap and its Vision 2025 for an inclusive and connected society. In a nutshell, the system is designed to provide unique digital identifiers linked to biometric and demographic data, thus enabling secure, seamless access to services for over one million citizens. 'This is more than just a digital ID – it's about empowering people, creating transparent institutions and laying the foundation for inclusive digital growth,' commented Zchwantech's chairman Datuk Seow Gim Shen. 'We commend the Timor Leste government's leadership in prioritising national digital transformation and are ready to support Timor Leste every step of the way.' Reaffirming the delivery of its commitment, Zchwantech,'s executive director Alex Chan Chau Loong described the project as an undertaking where 'vision meets execution'. 'We're turning Timor Leste's Digital Revolution goals into reality. Our Digital ID platform is built to be both agile and rigorously secure, thus ensuring fast deployment while safeguarding citizen trust,' he envisages. 'Critically, it is future-ready for connectivity to ASEAN systems therefore Timor Leste grows hand-in-hand with the region.' Pilot showcase zone As part of the proposed phased deployment model, Zchwantech has earmarked Oecusse – Timor-Leste's Special Administrative Region – as the ideal pilot location to launch the Digital ID platform. The showcase envisions Oecusse as a controlled, scalable testbed that can demonstrate tangible benefits ahead of a full nationwide roll-out. This pilot concept aligns with Timor Leste's strategy to build confidence in new technologies through live demonstrations, stakeholder engagement and phased adoption across government ministries and institutions. If adopted, Timor Leste stands to become one of the first ASEAN nations to implement a nationwide digital identity framework powered by biometrics and secure data infrastructure – one which positions the country as a regional trailblazer in digital public service innovation. The proposed platform supports the country's aspirations toward ASEAN accession while reinforcing national goals for financial inclusion, transparent governance and cross-border digital interoperability. Backed by a potential investment of up to US$13.8 mil (RM58.2 mil), the platform is ready for full implementation pending government approval and alignment with national procurement protocols. – July 5, 2025
