Zenrich imports 192,000kgs of wagyu, cements Malaysia's status as hub for premium Japanese beef

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has cemented its place as a regional hub for premium Japanese beef with Zenrich Wagyu's record-breaking import of 192,000 kilogrammes of Japanese Wagyu in 2024.
The remarkable volume - equivalent to 600 cattle or 12.86 million silky slices of marbled perfection - has earned the company an Asean Records recognition for the "Largest Annual Volume of Japanese Wagyu Imported in One Year".
The milestone, celebrated at the grand opening of Zenrich Wagyu's flagship restaurant Wagyu by La Moon, signals Malaysia's growing appetite for premium halal-certified beef.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup remarked: "The record is an example of the hard work of Malaysian companies like Zenrich Wagyu, our trade partners and our commitment to bringing the best of the world to Malaysia while strengthening our place in the global food scene."
Zenrich Wagyu's commitment to halal-certified A5 Miyazaki Wagyu reflects a broader mission to make premium beef accessible to a wider audience, the company said.
"We believe the market has been booming ever since the Covid-19 pandemic. Before, it was deemed exclusive, but now everyone can try it," said Zenrich Wagyu director Liven Chong.
Meanwhile, Wagyu by La Moon offers a seamless blend of Japanese culinary artistry and local hospitality.
"For our Wagyu buffet, we are the cheapest in the market, and we want to let as many people try our products as possible," Chong added.
Wagyu by La Moon's launch comes at a pivotal moment as Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
"As the country gears up for Visit Malaysia 2026, establishments like Wagyu by La Moon underscore the vital role of food in defining Malaysia's narrative," Kurup.
"Beyond the allure of pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and bustling cities, it is places like this that showcase the heart of Malaysia - where the world's finest flavours are brought to life with a unique halal twist, paired with the unmistakable warmth of Malaysian hospitality," he added.
Zenrich Wagyu is preparing to expand its footprint in Malaysia.
"Soon, we are opening our second branch in Lalaport and planning to open a third one to cater to more special and expensive tastes," Chong revealed.
"We are targeting more than 800 cows for 2025. Our Wagyu is halal-certified by Jakim in Japan, and we are trusted because our cows are traceable."
Under the expert guidance of Chef Saburou Niitsu, a veteran with 35 years of experience, Wagyu by La Moon's menu bridges Japanese culinary tradition with halal practices.
Signature dishes like yakiniku, shabu-shabu and sukiyaki deliver authentic Japanese flavours while appealing to Malaysia's multicultural palate.

US trade partners race for deals as Trump readies tariff notices on Monday (July 7)

SOUTH-EAST ASIA (Bloomberg): Major US trading partners scrambled over the weekend to finalise trade deals or lobby for extra time as President Donald Trump said he's notifying about a dozen countries on Monday of the new tariff level on their shipments to the US. "I signed some letters and they'll go out on Monday - probably 12,' Trump told reporters over the Fourth of July weekend, adding that the missives involve "different amounts of money, different amounts of tariffs and somewhat different statements.' Asked to identify the countries, he said, "I have to announce it on Monday.' Trump's latest remarks suggest talks remain fluid and deals elusive, three days before the July 9 deadline announced by the US administration. The letters initially were supposed to go out on July 4 with a tariff imposition date of Aug. 1, based on Trump's earlier comments. But US officials were busily negotiating through the holiday weekend, including with Japan, South Korea, the European Union, India and Vietnam. One of Trump's signature moves in dealmaking is a unilateral threat when negotiations reach critical stages, so it's unclear whether the letters he describes are real, or merely meant to strike fear into trading partners still reluctant to offer last-minute concessions. After Trump announced an agreement with Vietnam last week, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said negotiators were still coordinating with their US counterparts to finalize the details. While an interim accord with India was also expected to be reached, officials in New Delhi have signaled a tougher stance in recent days, threatening levies on some US goods in retaliation to Washington's higher tariffs on automobiles and their components. Also concerned about auto tariffs is South Korea, which has discussed with US officials extending the deadline in a last-ditch bid to avert higher levies. Basking in a major legislative win last week and with the US stock market at record levels, Trump's newest trade barriers risk re-igniting investors' concerns about a broad and complex new web of customs duties to be paid by American importers. The initial rollout of Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs on April 2 sparked fears of a US recession and sent markets tumbling. That gave way to a 90-day freeze of those rates at 10% through July 9 for the more than 50 nations targeted. On top of the additional costs that tariffs create for US companies that purchase goods from abroad, domestic exporters face the possibility of retaliation from economies, including the EU. EU member states were briefed on the status of negotiations on Friday after a round of talks in Washington last week ,and were told that a technical agreement in principle was close, Bloomberg News previously reported. Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said the country is prepared for all possible tariff scenarios. Speaking on Fuji TV's "Sunday News The Prime' program, he said Japan - another major auto producer trying to avoid Trump's tariffs - is ready to "stand firm' and defend its interests while anticipating every possible situation. Cambodia's government said in a statement on Friday that it had agreed with the US on a framework agreement that will be released publicly soon, with a pledge to continue cooperating closely. At 49%, Cambodia's threatened reciprocal tariff was among Trump's highest. SEMPORNA (July 6): The sprouting of new hotels, resorts, chalets and lodges in Semporna and its surrounding islands is a clear sign of growing confidence in Sabah's east coast as a safe and attractive destination. Many of these accommodations, some built on stilts over the water, show that more tourists will continue to visit the region, driven by improved security. Among the new developments are Seafest Regency and Pearl Bohey Dulang Resorts, both of which officially opened this year to meet the rising demand for accommodations in Semporna. Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who joined Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and foreign delegates on a site visit to the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone) on Saturday, said Sabah's tourism sector continues to show healthy growth. The state recorded 1.44 million visitor arrivals between January and May this year, generating an estimated RM3.3 million in tourism receipts. Joniston said the steady increase in visitor arrivals, particularly from international markets, is closely linked to Sabah's strong security framework, which is diligently maintained by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom). 'The fact that Sabah has reported zero kidnapping-for-ransom incidents over the past several years is a clear reflection of ESSCom's commitment to keeping our waters and communities safe. 'This complements the ongoing efforts of the Sabah Tourism Board to promote Sabah as a safe and welcoming destination,' he said. Joniston was speaking at a dinner held in conjunction with the site visit, which involved 15 diplomatic representatives and officials from 10 countries namely the United States, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, China, South Korea, and Spain. Present were Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman; Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah Permanent Secretary Datuk Josie Lai; Joint Forces commander Datuk Zahani Zainal Abidin; and ESSCom Commander Datuk Victor Sanjos. Earlier in the day, the delegation visited Pulau Omadal, Pulau Sibuan, Pulau Bohey Dulang and Pulau Mataking. 'We are seeing the positive results of these close collaborations. Tourists feel safe to explore Sabah, even in the ESSZone, and investors are also confident to keep investing here,' said Joniston who chairs Sabah Tourism Board. According to the latest figures from the Sabah Tourism Board, international visitors accounted for 559,150 arrivals, while domestic tourists made up 879,420 arrivals. China (243,688) remains Sabah's top international market, followed by South Korea (76,685). Joniston also highlighted a strong increase in tourist arrivals from Europe, which recorded 35,240 visitors from January to May, a 25.6 per cent growth compared to the same period last year. The top European source markets include the United Kingdom and Ireland (13,910 arrivals), Germany (3,854), and France (2,750). Meanwhile, the United States contributed 9,356 arrivals, while Canada recorded 2,949 arrivals. Joniston expressed confidence that Sabah's tourism sector will continue on its positive path, supported by the joint commitment of security agencies, local communities, and tourism industry players. 'We consistently maintain a positive outlook on the growth of tourist arrivals to Sabah. 'With ESSCom's strong support and the growing trust of our visitors, we are well-positioned to welcome even more tourists in the coming months,' he said.
