Danny Dyer's 'worst film in the history of the world' fans can't get enough of
With Danny Dyer all set to appear on ITV's new interview series The Assembly this Saturday, April 26, we're taking a walk down a Danny Dyer-shaped road and remembering a few more hidden gems from the former EastEnders actor's movies and shows.
Featuring a very loose interpretation of the phrase 'hidden gem', Assassin has been dubbed 'the worst film in the history of the world ' by some viewers, but is absolutely adored by some who call it a 'very underrated, brilliant movie'.
With a direct-to-DVD release, the 2015 film features Danny Dyer and the Kemp brothers, Gary and Martin Kemp, alongside Holly Weston, Robert Cavanah, and Deborah Moore.
Directed by J. K. Amalou, Assassin tells the story of Jamie, a hitman who has been hired to kill a corrupt official. However things start to go horribly wrong when he ends up falling for the daughter of his intended target (after already killing said target). With Jamie's love interest putting herself in the path of danger as she begins to question the death of her father, Jamie now has to protect his lady from the two gangster brothers who hired him in the first place.
The movie was generally panned by critics, receiving 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.8/10 on IMDB.
However, Dyer's film resonated with many viewers: 'Low budget as it was, Assassin was never going to be the best movie ever made. A poor man's Bourne Identity? Maybe not, but certainly a gritty, London underworld version of it. The plot was interesting, and while it had to be taken with perhaps a grain or two of salt, it was engaging and exciting all the way through. Assassin is a far better spend of your time than another Hollywood superhero movie any day.'
Another glowing audience review of the film says: 'Brilliant movie, very underrated and I don't really understand why people dislike it so much. The acting was great and the storyline was interesting and suspenseful. The movie obviously didn't have a huge budget but for what it accomplished it was fantastic. Great gritty thriller.'
Many were still generally negative about The Assassin, with one critic's review of the film calling Dyer a 'talented actor' stating: 'Dyer doesn't so much go through the motions in the role as plead with the audience to save him the bother and recall the motions from last time. He's undoubtedly a talented actor – Harold Pinter cast him twice – but it gets harder and harder to keep the faith each time he trots out the gruff hardman routine that's on display here.'
Another critic calls Assassin 'crashingly dull' and added: 'Danny Dyer's hard man whizzes to and from his assignments on a high-powered motorbike, but this crashingly dull low-budget British crime thriller couldn't be more pedestrian.'
Audience sentiment towards the film follows a similar track, with one scathing review stating: 'Probably the worst film in the history of the World. Danny Dyer (professional cockney geezer to the uninitiated) plays the eponymous role, and he plays it in a bizarre, understated way, possibly in an attempt to show he has some sort of range. He doesn't.. Aloof and cool is the presumed intention, but in Dyer's inept hands the character is sullen, sulky and oddly camp.
'The plot is predictable, the gangsters are staggeringly stupid and the dialogue - it is so utterly detached from any kind of reasonable reality that it made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions. I cannot for the life of me work out how a film like this gets made - I can only assume it was for a tax write-off.'
While one review simply reads: 'Dear, oh dear, oh dear! Reasonable storyline but what dreadful acting! Dyer at his best - which was awful.'
Another viewer perhaps sums up the movie in the most balanced way: 'Danny D is an institution, one doesn't watch his films to be intellectually challenged, he needs a good writer and director.'
Danny Dyer will be seen in the series premiere of ITV 's The Assembly, slated for broadcast this Saturday, April 26, at 10:05pm on ITV1.

'I said 'I need to come in' because at this point I don't know what's going to happen,' she continued. 'And I want to finish this arc of the story. Not coming in for the next two weeks is not going to change anything, but at least let me put the full stop on a story that's been playing out for nearly two and a half years. 'If we get to the end of that and we see them get married and we see them successful, if beyond that it's a mess, I can leave and feel like I've put a full stop on something." 5 The soap star revealed she has completed 15 rounds of chemo Credit: Instagram

Coronation Street's Simon Gregson lays bare 'very strange' reality behind soap scenes
Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson has opened up about his long-running role as Steve McDonald in the soap, admitting he has shared some very intimate moments with co-stars The soaps might portray ordinary, everyday existence, but what goes on behind the cameras is far from ordinary, according to Coronation Street 's Simon Gregson. Simon has been playing Steve McDonald for more than 35 years, navigating dramatic plots including gangster beatings and seven marriages, to five different wives and an extended struggle with depression. Yet it's the intimate scenes that Simon has found most demanding. On the People Are Deep podcast, he revealed: "In my job you have to get to know people so very quickly because you can have only have just met them that day and you've got to snog them, be half naked with them in a bed, and do a 'before the watershed' sex scene and tell them you love them." The 50-year-old added that working so closely with fellow actors means "it becomes very raw" almost immediately. He described it as "a very strange, but a nice feeling". Simon was discovered for his Corrie part whilst still at school, though acting had never been his intended career path. "I joined Coronation Street by accident," he revealed. "I was wagging school with a friend of was adamant that we were just going to stay off school for the whole day, but I said 'Absolutely not. We need to go in, we need to do the register so at least they think we're there, and then we'll go to Manchester Arndale Centre.'" Simon and his pal were in for a surprise when they rocked up at school, only to find ITV talent scouts on the hunt for fresh faces to join the cast of Coronation Street. "They took photographs of us," Simon reminisced, "because I think they had a certain look they were looking for. I had blue eyes, the dad was Irish. That was as simple as it was." The scouts had their eyes set on Simon and Nicholas Cochrane from Kingsway School to audition for a couple of new roles on the cobbles. "Then," Simon recounted, "some guy started talking to us and we had to stop him and say, 'Sorry, you're talking to us as if we've got the job.' And he went, 'Yeah you've got the job.' And I've been there ever since." Before this unexpected turn, Nicholas Cochrane had already dipped his toes into the world of TV as an extra for Granada TV, which produces Coronation Street. And after he landed the part of Andy McDonald, the producers wanted someone with a similar look to play his twin brother. When the opportunity came knocking, Simon didn't hesitate. He confessed: "I'd never acted in my life. I didn't want to be an actor." He was more enticed by the prospect of television's financial rewards, saying: "It was the fact it was TV, and TV sound sounded very much like money to me, I wanted some of that green stuff!" While Nicholas bowed out after seven years, with just a few reappearances for family weddings, Simon's impromptu decision has led to a career spanning decades on the beloved soap. "I wouldn't say no to being in Coronation Street, playing Steve, for the rest of my life," Simon declared. "For me it was never about ambition. It was never about treading the boards and trying new things. For me it was always a job, you know, a regular wage. "I love what I do. I love the people that I work with. So as long as they'll have me, and pay me, I'll stay."
